Pigmentation & Summer: Why It Shows Up - and How to Keep It Under Control
Summer is our favourite time of year… but not always our skin’s.
If you struggle with pigmentation, you may notice it becomes darker, patchier or more obvious as soon as the weather warms up. And yes - there’s a reason for that.
At My Escape, we’re all about helping you understand why your skin behaves the way it does, and what you can realistically do to keep things calm, bright and even.
Let’s break it down simply.
Why Pigmentation Flares in the Heat
Your skin has little cells called melanocytes. Their job is to produce melanin - the pigment that gives your skin its colour.
Here’s the fun part (or not-so-fun, depending on your skin):
👉 Melanocytes absolutely love warmth and light.
As soon as the sun comes out or the temperature rises, they get excited and start pumping out more pigment. That means freckles pop, melasma deepens, and old pigmentation you thought you’d treated can start creeping back through.
But the Rest of Your Skin? Not a Fan.
While melanocytes thrive in heat… the rest of your skin, unfortunately, doesn’t.
Warmth can trigger inflammation and slow down your barrier recovery - and an inflamed, stressed skin is far more prone to pigmentation issues. Even if you stay out of the sun, heat alone can be enough to flare melasma.
So if you’ve ever said, “I swear it darkens even when I’m indoors,” you’re not imagining it.
How to Keep Pigmentation Under Control This Summer
This is where your routine and treatments matter. Pigmentation is manageable; it just needs consistency and the right strategy.
1. Pigment (aka tyrosinase) inhibitors are your daily non-negotiable
Think of pigment inhibitors as the “calm down” message for your melanocytes. They help prevent excess pigment from forming in the first place.
Some of our favourite ingredients include:
Vitamin C
Niacinamide
Oxyresveratrol
Azelaic Acid
Licorice Root
Gentle retinol or AHA blends (if your skin tolerates them in summer)
These don’t bleach the skin - they simply help regulate pigment activity and keep things even.
2. SPF - Every Day, No Exceptions
If pigmentation is your concern, SPF becomes your best friend.
Always:
SPF 30–50 – our favourite is the Mother Mineral SPF
Daily use (even if you’re mostly indoors)
Reapplying when you’re outdoors for long periods
Physical/mineral SPFs are often better for pigmentation-prone skin because they help reflect heat, not just UV.
If you only change one thing this summer, make it this.
3. Keep the Skin Cool, Calm & Hydrated
Support your skin with:
Hydrating serums
Barrier-loving moisturisers
Cooling facial mists
Plenty of water (yes, it matters)
When the skin is calm and well supported, pigmentation is far easier to manage.
4. Stay Consistent With Maintenance Treatments
Summer doesn't mean you can’t treat your skin - you just need the right treatments.
Great options this time of year include:
Circadia Enzyme facials
LED light therapy
Our Signature Facials which offer the ultimate in hydration
Our Level 2 Reconditioning Facials offer gentle peels that offer excellent inhibitor prowess such as Ultraceuticals Brightening Activation Mask or go with our stronger and new treatment- LumiZyme.
These help keep inflammation low, pigment activity under control and your complexion bright through the warmer months.
